Trump administration ordered to fund SNAP benefits during government shutdown
"I applaud the court for its quick action to provide immediate, emergency relief to more than 42 million Americans,"
"For now, these families can continue putting food on their tables, and thousands of nonprofit food banks, pantries and other organizations across the country can avoid the impossible burden that would have resulted if SNAP benefits had been halted."
"While this protective measure is temporary, the National Council of Nonprofits is committed to securing permanent protections for the American people and the nonprofits they depend on."
Judge John James McConnell Jr. ordered the administration to fund SNAP emergency benefits and requested a progress report by Monday. Massachusetts District Judge Indira Talwani separately ruled the administration must provide at least reduced SNAP benefits for November and report back by Monday. Twenty-five Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C. sued, alleging the administration withheld up to $6 billion in emergency SNAP funds. Democratic officials accused the administration of weaponizing hunger. Nonprofit food banks already saw surges in demand as millions of families prepared for benefits to freeze, and nonprofits seek permanent protections for beneficiaries.
