Trump clarifies who is ultimately in charge in Venezuela: Me'
"U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed what was already a strong suspicion: there will be no elections in Venezuela over the coming 30 days, as stipulated by Venezuelan law in the event of a forced replacement of the head of state. Instead, the Trump administration will oversee the South American country while it rebuilds the oil sector, a task that the U.S. president estimates will take under 18 months."
"Now that Washington has agreed to negotiate with the country's acting president Delcy Rodriguez, elections in the near future are completely out of the question. We have to fix the country first. You can't have an election. There's no way the people could even vote, the president stated. No, it's going to take a period of time. We have we have to nurse the country back to health."
Elections in Venezuela will not occur within the next 30 days following the forced replacement provision of Venezuelan law. The U.S. administration will oversee Venezuela during a reconstruction of the oil sector, which President Trump estimates will take under 18 months. A team of senior U.S. officials will coordinate the Venezuelan administration during the transition. President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured at a military base and Maduro later pleaded not guilty in Manhattan federal court to narcotics and weapons charges.
