Donald Trump has called for the resignation of Intel's CEO Lip-Bu Tan due to concerns over his connections to Chinese technology companies. Senator Tom Cotton highlighted these potential conflicts with U.S. security regulations. Tan was appointed to lead Intel in March following the dismissal of Pat Gelsinger, who struggled to keep pace with competitors like TSMC. Intel is also facing significant workforce reductions, with 24,000 layoffs announced this year and the cancellation of projects in Europe. Intel has emphasized its commitment to U.S. national security amid these challenges.
Trump stated, "The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem. Thank you for your attention to this problem!"
Tan was named Intel's CEO in March to overhaul the struggling chipmaker's business after the board ejected his predecessor, Pat Gelsinger, who fell behind TSMC in technology.
Intel announced plans to lay off 24,000 employees this year and to cancel planned projects in Germany and Poland due to ongoing struggles in the business.
Intel affirmed its commitment to U.S. national security, stating that they and Tan "are deeply committed to the national security of the U.S. and the integrity of our role in the U.S. defense ecosystem."
