Donald Trump signed a March 27 executive order directing federal history sites, parks, and museums to become solemn, uplifting monuments that emphasize American greatness, progress, and prosperity. The order warned of withholding Smithsonian funding unless museums avoid "ideological indoctrination" and restore inspirational portrayals. The Department of the Interior was instructed to remove content that "inappropriately disparage[s]" Americans, including from colonial times, and to emphasize achievements, progress, and the beauty of the American landscape. Trump also ordered reversal of monument removals made during the Biden administration, seeking to reinstate Confederate and neo-Confederate displays. Continued public statements and posts reinforce the push to whitewash difficult aspects of American history.

Washington, D.C., museumgoers must not be "subjected to ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history."
