The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, arrived in the US in 2021 after serving with a CIA-linked Afghan partner force and via a Biden-era resettlement program that admitted 190,000 Afghans. Lakanwal was granted asylum this year by the Trump administration after vetting and is reported to have had acute mental health problems and now faces murder charges. President Trump issued social-media calls to pause migration from “Third World” countries, to terminate millions of alleged Biden-era illegal admissions, and to remove or denaturalize immigrants not deemed net assets, shifting public focus from the victims to the suspect’s origins and provoking a wave of racist and anti-immigrant invective.
