About 40% of U.S. farmworkers are undocumented immigrants, and intensified immigration enforcement has driven many into hiding and left farms short-staffed. The resulting labor shortage risks supply shock-induced food shortages and immediate dangers to the American food supply. Cessation of unauthorized inflows combined with an insufficient legal workforce disrupts production costs and threatens domestic food production stability and consumer prices. Increased funding for enforcement is likely to worsen the threat. The response includes cutting farmworker wages and greater reliance on the H-2A temporary-worker program, which often lacks basic labor protections and bargaining rights.
