Texas Rep. Nicole Collier spent the night in the Capitol after refusing to sign a "permission slip" required for a Department of Public Safety escort. The escort rules were imposed by Republicans in reaction to Democrats leaving the state to block a redistricting effort aimed at increasing GOP representation. The majority of her colleagues complied with the escort rules, while Collier chose to protest against what she perceived as governmental overreach. She asserted her rights and expressed her dissent towards the measures taken by the Republican-led chamber.
Democratic Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier was forced to spend the night inside the Texas State Capitol building in Austin after she refused to sign a "permission slip" to accept the mandatory escort by the Department of Public Safety imposed on Democrats by the Republicans who control the chamber.
Collier stated, "I refuse to sign. I will not agree to be in DPS custody. I'm not a criminal. I am exercising my right to resist and oppose the decisions of our government. So this is my form of protest."
