US immigration crackdown, arrests under way in Charlotte, North Carolina
"Americans should be able to live without fear of violent criminal illegal aliens hurting them, their families, or their neighbors, Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement on Saturday, according to The Associated Press news agency. We are surging DHS [Department of Homeland Security] law enforcement to Charlotte to ensure Americans are safe and public safety threats are removed."
"Local officials, including Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, criticised such actions, saying in a statement they are causing unnecessary fear and uncertainty. We want people in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to know we stand with all residents who simply want to go about their lives, said the statement, which was also signed by County Commissioner Mark Jerrell and Stephanie Sneed of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg education board."
Agents from ICE, Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security have been deployed to Charlotte to carry out arrests as part of a Trump administration immigration crackdown. Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Americans should be able to live without fear and that DHS law enforcement is surging to Charlotte to remove public safety threats. Local leaders including Mayor Vi Lyles, County Commissioner Mark Jerrell and education board member Stephanie Sneed said the actions are causing unnecessary fear and uncertainty and affirmed support for all residents. Charlotte has more than 900,000 residents, including over 150,000 foreign-born. Community groups observed increased stops and pullovers by federal agents.
