Chloe Kim and Eileen Gu publicly defended American freeskier Hunter Hess after he said he did not support President Trump’s tightened immigration crackdown. Hess told reporters that wearing the flag does not mean he represents everything happening in the United States. Trump responded on Truth Social, calling Hess “a real Loser” and saying he would be hard-pressed to root for him at the Games. Kim, the daughter of South Korean immigrants, cited her experiences with racism, urged unity and standing up for one another, and affirmed pride in representing the United States while supporting athletes’ right to voice opinions. Gu expressed sympathy for athletes caught in political controversy.
