Democrats released an alleged 2003 birthday note from Donald Trump to Jeffrey Epstein containing a short dialogue and the lines "A pal is a wonderful thing" and "and may every day be another wonderful secret." The note was reportedly part of a book of letters from Epstein's friends for his 50th birthday and appeared over an image of a naked woman with the signature replacing pubic hair. The Wall Street Journal first reported the note in July. The White House denied that Trump drew the picture or signed the note; Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the story "false" and said the president's legal team would continue to pursue litigation against the Wall Street Journal. Trump has sued the newspaper for $10 billion and maintained he never sent the note. Epstein, a convicted sex offender, was accused of abusing underage girls and died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting a federal sex trafficking trial.
