"They want to buy. They are a great ally. We will be doing that. We will be selling them F-35s,"
"We told the Trump administration that the supply of F-35s to Saudi Arabia needs to be subject to Saudi normalization with Israel,"
"The official added that the U.S. giving Saudi Arabia F-35s without getting any diplomatic deliverables in return would be "a mistake and counterproductive.""
"It takes minutes for an F-35 to fly from Saudi Arabia to Israel,"
The U.S. intends to sell F-35 fighters to Saudi Arabia, a platform currently held in the Middle East only by Israel. Supplying F-35s to Saudi Arabia would alter the regional military balance and could erode Israel's qualitative military edge, a commitment codified into U.S. law in 2008. Israel does not openly oppose a sale but has asked that F-35 deliveries be conditioned on Saudi normalization with Israel and warned that unconditioned transfers would be a mistake. Israel is likely to seek U.S. security guarantees and restrictions on basing or deployment of Saudi F-35s.
