The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a funding freeze affecting the University of Maine system, amounting to $100 million, which halts various grants and contracts. This decision follows a contentious exchange between President Trump and Governor Janet Mills over compliance with Title IX regarding trans women in sports. The USDA clarified that the pause will remain until further evaluations are conducted related to Title VI and Title IX violations, leaving many programs, including 4-H and research initiatives, in jeopardy as they assess the financial impact.
"You better do it because you're not going to get federal funding," Trump said.
"We're going to follow the law, sir. We'll see you in court," Mills replied.
"The pause will remain in effect until further notice," USDA stated.
"We're still assessing the total amount of active awards across the System impacted," Warren added.
