"In an emergency hearing handed down on Sept. 11, a federal judge ruled that Venezuelans can re-register for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13. The ruling by Northern California District Court Judge Edward M. Chen allows all current TPS holders from Venezuela the chance to extend their status until Oct. 2, 2026 if they previously registered in 2021 or 2023."
"Those who registered in 2021 and do not re-register by Sept. 13 are set to lose their protections on Nov. 7. The Central American Resource Center, an organization focused on serving Latino immigrants in San Francisco, noted in a statement that today's decision came "after the government failed to make the portal available for individuals to renew their existing protections by the deadline." Chen's ruling comes in the wake of an ongoing court case between TPS advocates and the federal government."
A federal judge ordered that Venezuelan Temporary Protected Status holders can re-register through 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 13 to preserve or extend protections. Current TPS beneficiaries from Venezuela who registered in 2021 or 2023 can extend status through Oct. 2, 2026; those who registered in 2021 and fail to re-register by Sept. 13 will lose protections on Nov. 7. The Central American Resource Center said the decision followed government failure to make the renewal portal available by the deadline. The ruling arises amid litigation between TPS advocates and the federal government, and pending applicants need not reapply.
