Violence is coming to define American political life | Stephen Marche
Briefly

On June 14, 2025, a military parade led by Donald Trump served as a stark representation of America’s self-parody and political degradation. Transitioning from the upbeat 'Jump' to the protest-laden 'Fortunate Son', musicians showcased a moment of irony amidst impending violence. The parade, meant to present military might, fell short, resembling a poorly staged school play, lacking discipline and cohesion. Accompanied by societal turmoil, such as the assassination of a political figure and protests met with force, this event underscored the rapidly deepening political chaos in America.
If this was some kind of surreptitious protest by the musicians, I salute them, but given the time and the place, sheer obliviousness is a better explanation.
Authoritarian military parades are supposed to project invincible strength... In Trump's parade, the soldiers resembled children forced to participate in a half-assed school play.
