252 Venezuelan men were returned to Venezuela after being held in El Salvador's CECOT concentration camp. Among those released were several individuals including Andry José Hernández Romero and Neri Alvarado Borges. In exchange for their return, Nicolás Maduro released political prisoners and U.S. citizens. The deal was complicated by competing negotiations involving U.S. officials, with differing terms being proposed that complicated the situation further. Ultimately, the mix of negotiations did not culminate in the planned deal as intended.
Among the people who survived their detention in El Salvador are Andry José Hernández Romero, Neri Alvarado Borges, and Christian, who came to the US as an unaccompanied minor.
In exchange for the return to Venezuela of those men, Maduro released dozens of political prisoners and 10 US citizens or permanent residents.
The Trump administration's top diplomat, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was overseeing a deal to free several Americans and dozens of political prisoners held in Venezuela.
Part of the reason the deal never happened was that President Trump's envoy to Venezuela was working on his own deal with terms Venezuela deemed more attractive.
