"I'm old enough to remember when it was frowned upon-even considered very bad-for the White House to photoshop anything or digitally alter photos for the public record. On Thursday, the official White House social media accounts posted a digitally altered photo of an arrested protester to make it look like she was crying. About thirty minutes earlier, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted what seems to be the original image of the arrest-in which the woman appears completely composed."
"The woman pictured is Nekima Levy Armstrong, a civil rights attorney who was arrested on Thursday for leading Sunday's protest at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Protesters entered the church chanting, "ICE Out" and "Justice for Renee Good," referring to the 37-year-old who was recently murdered by an ICE agent. The church's pastor, David Easterwood, is reportedly the acting director of ICE's field office for enforcement and removal operations in St. Paul."
An official White House social media account posted a digitally altered photo of an arrested protester, adding tears and darkening her skin. Thirty minutes earlier, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted an apparently unaltered image showing the woman composed. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt retweeted Noem's post. The woman is Nekima Levy Armstrong, a civil rights attorney arrested for leading a protest at a St. Paul church where protesters chanted "ICE Out" and "Justice for Renee Good." The church's pastor, David Easterwood, is reportedly acting director of ICE’s St. Paul field office. Major outlets reported the alteration; the arresting officer's face is blurred in both images.
