You Can Stop Taking Off Your Shoes at Airport TSA Checkpoints at SFO and Elsewhere
Briefly

The Department of Homeland Security has announced a significant policy change allowing airline passengers to keep their shoes on while passing through TSA checkpoints. This applies to all passengers in regular TSA lines, not just those in the Pre-Check program. The change will be implemented in phases, having already started at San Francisco International Airport. Other airports, including LAX and LaGuardia, are also set to adopt the new policy. Shoes will need to be removed only if they trigger alarms during scanning.
The Department of Homeland Security announced that airline passengers can now keep their shoes on while passing through TSA checkpoints. This change applies to regular TSA lines as well.
Footwear can remain on unless it sets off alarms at scanners or magnetometers, in which case it will need to be removed for further scanning.
The policy shift will roll out in phases, with San Francisco International Airport already implementing the change as of Tuesday. Other airports will follow.
The practice of taking off shoes at airports began in 2006, five years after a thwarted terrorist incident inspired security changes.
