The Email Markup Consortium's latest study reveals persistent issues in HTML email accessibility, with only 21 emails passing all checks out of 443,585 analyzed. This year, the top problems remain unchanged, albeit with color contrast added. The report emphasizes reliance on automated testing for scale, yet acknowledges its limitations, as many accessibility issues go unnoticed, particularly in image alt text context. The frequent oversights include essential attributes like lang and dir, underscoring an urgent need for better practices in email accessibility across platforms, despite noted enhancements by specific email clients.
According to EMC, only 21 emails passed all accessibility checks - and they were all written by the same author representing two different brands. This highlights the pervasive issue in email accessibility.
Email that pass our checks may still have accessibility issues that we cannot pick up through automated testing. We check if an alt attribute is present on an image, but we do not check if the text is suitable for that image.
