Experts warn that children deeply engaged with Fortnite may develop a high-pitched accent influenced by the game's tonal dynamics. This accent often features fast delivery and upward inflections, reflecting excitement or frustration typical of young gamers. The phenomenon, termed 'linguistic conversation', raises concerns about children's social interactions, highlighting the importance of real-world connections to support language and emotional development. While gaming has benefits, experts stress moderation and in-person interaction as critical for holistic growth.
'Because of the game's young player base, it mimics the sound of an overly excited or frustrated child's voice,' Preply explained.
'While gaming can be fun and even beneficial in moderation, it's also important for children to spend time interacting with others in person,' Preply added.
'The accent is fuelled by the intense, sometimes chaotic nature of the game, especially when players get knocked down,' Preply explained.
'These real-world connections help support not only their language development, but also their social and emotional growth.'
