Gamers Say There's AI Slop in the New Season of Fortnite
"Say 'No' to AI slop," a highly upvoted post in the Reddit forum fumed. "A billion-dollar company should have no problem supporting real artists for real art."
"The AI tag is relevant to art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation."
"It makes no sense for game stores, where AI will be involved in nearly all future production."
"Why stop at AI use? We could have mandatory disclosures for what shampoo brand the developer uses," he sneered. "Customers deserve to know lol."
A major Fortnite update included promotional and in-game images that players allege were generated by AI. Users posted examples on the r/FortNiteBR subreddit showing visual artifacts, including a yeti depicted with mismatched toe counts, and labeled the assets 'AI slop.' Moderators created a megathread and a poll in which over 80 percent of respondents said AI content does not belong in Fortnite or other games. The timing coincided with Epic CEO Tim Sweeney criticizing Steam's requirement for AI disclosures, arguing AI is integral to game development and mocking mandatory labels. Some individual AI accusations later appeared to be incorrect.
