Game director Glen Schofield praised Kevin Spacey's performance as the villain Jonathan Irons in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, calling it 'unbelievable' and highlighting a standout speech about democracy. Schofield noted that Spacey was unfamiliar with video game production, required a trailer on set, and sometimes 'got a little weird' by saying things 'that just weren't proper,' prompting the team to fake laughter. Advanced Warfare released in November 2014. Following 2017 allegations, Spacey denied the charges, was later acquitted of sexual assault charges, and found not liable in the Rapp case. Plans to revive the character for a sequel were abandoned.
"He just is a great actor," Schofield said. "Then when we said cut, you could tell the video games weren't his thing. We had to get him a trailer. So he had a trailer outside that he would go in and he was a little bit more difficult, I would say. There's a speech where he talks about democracy, and that's just a really amazing speech."
"We all had to fake laugh. There was some stuff," Schofield said, without elaborating.
"Schofield went on to say that Spacey "got a little weird once in a while on the set," adding that the actor would say things "that just weren't proper."
"We were going to go there," Schofield said. "I'm glad we didn't, because it was like two months before we would have shipped when the scandal broke."
