The problem with The Last of Us season 2 is that it's too faithful an adaptation
Briefly

The finale of Season 2 of HBO's The Last of Us sparked discussion among fans regarding its character arcs and plot direction. Critics Kyle Orland and Andrew Cunningham express differing views, focusing on Ellie's transformation into a revenge-driven character. While Ellie’s motivations align with her established persona, the shift from a rich post-apocalyptic narrative to a revenge trip is viewed by some as a downgrade, particularly after the loss of significant characters, leading to diminished story dynamics in the season's second half.
I don't think Ellie's turn to "the dark side" is unearned, exactly. But I do think that this single-minded, revenge-obsessed version of Ellie is a lot less interesting than the character we grew to love in season 1.
Trading the first season's story... for the second season's story (Ellie's revenge fantasy) is a huge downgrade! They killed the most interesting character and, with him, the story's most interesting dynamic.
