This year's Summer Game Fest (SGF) was deeply affected by political turmoil, highlighted by escalating protests against immigration raids near the event. The atmosphere, while enjoyable for attendees, was tainted by the proximity of an ICE raid and a controversial statement made by Ian Proulx of 1047 Games, who wore a provocative hat that referenced a divisive political slogan. This juxtaposition of joyful gaming discussions and serious social issues created a complex emotional landscape for participants, leading to reflective conversations during the event's mixers.
But while I was comfortably ensconced in a happy bubble, the escalating conflict between demonstrators protesting against immigration raids and the Los Angeles Police Department cast a dark and soul-shaking pall that could not be ignored.
Proulx's hat became the story of the day, if not the whole event. It was the main topic of conversation at the lobby bar of the JW Marriott hotel.
