"Drafted 27th overall in 2008 and debuting in 2009, Carlson was a mainstay on Washington's blueline for 17 seasons. He leaves DC as the franchise's 5th all-time leading scorer, accumulating more goals and points than any other defenseman to ever don a Capitals sweater."
"The Washington Capitals have acquired a conditional first-round pick in either the 2026 NHL Draft or the 2027 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft from the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman John Carlson."
John Carlson, drafted 27th overall in 2008 and debuting in 2009, spent 17 seasons as a cornerstone defenseman for the Washington Capitals. He departs as the franchise's fifth all-time leading scorer and holds the record for most goals and points by any defenseman in Capitals history. In a trade deadline deal, the Capitals sent Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a conditional first-round pick (either 2026 or 2027) and a third-round pick in 2027. His consistent high-level play throughout his tenure makes him a strong candidate for his number to be retired at Capital One Arena.
