Cole Hutson practices with the Capitals for the first time, skates on a defense pair with Matt Roy
"He's kind of going with the flow, to be honest. He picks things up quick, and he's got the confidence, and he's got that puck-moving ability, so it'll be fun to watch. I think he's bringing something that we're looking for, and I think just like all the fans, we're excited to see him out there and ready to move forward."
"I think it's just a good right-shot partner for him. Just to start with, we'll see where it goes. I'm sure we'll move some things around. But I think he's a veteran presence, right shot, can help Cole through games, on the bench, in between periods, on the ice, and shifts. Good veteran leader to start your career."
Cole Hutson, the Capitals' 2024 second-round pick, made his first appearance at practice after signing his entry-level contract. Head coach Spencer Carbery paired the 19-year-old defenseman with veteran Matt Roy, positioning Hutson on the left side of defense. Roy praised Hutson's quick learning ability, confidence, and puck-moving skills. Carbery selected Roy as a veteran presence to guide Hutson through his early NHL career. The coaching staff also assigned Hutson to the second power play unit as quarterback, a role he previously held at Boston University and with Team USA. Rasmus Sandin was moved to the right side alongside Martin Fehervary to accommodate Hutson's placement.
