Ilya Samsonov reminisces about viral playoff moment when Alex Ovechkin yelled at him for miscue behind net that led to Bruins' double overtime goal
"“This is the second overtime, and by then it was already over 30 minutes of (extra) game time, so it's a really tough game. And then Ilyukha decided to go play the puck, stop it behind the net. He's like, 'Me! I'm gonna stop the game!'”"
The Capitals entered the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series as the higher seed but were eliminated in five games. The decisive moment came in double overtime of Game 3 when a hand-off behind the net was fumbled by goaltender Ilya Samsonov and defenseman Justin Schultz. Bruins forward Craig Smith scored an easy game-winning goal after the puck crossed the goal line. After the play, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was seen yelling at Samsonov as the team left the ice. Samsonov and Evgeny Kuznetsov later described the incident, including guidance about staying in the crease and not leaving the blue paint. Kuznetsov also attributed the error partly to fatigue late in extended overtime.
