"So I ended up getting stem cell injections in five discs in January, early January [2024]. And right away I was like... it was super painful. I was like, 'I went through all this and I don't feel better.' Six weeks came and [my doctor] was like, 'You can start training a little bit,' and I still didn't feel good. He was like, 'You know, since you're not playing and we're not super rushed,' he's like, 'Just give it 12 weeks.'"
"And I'm not even kidding you. Like on the day of the 12-week mark, I was like, 'Oh my, I'm moving.' And so I got into the gym and... I did a detox with [my wife] for a week... and a week in, I was like, 'All right, here we go.' I started training fairly hard. Not like right before training camp type hard, but decently hard, thinking that maybe there was a flicker of a chance."
TJ Oshie retired in June because chronic back pain prevented a return to play. He missed the entire 2024–25 season on long-term injured reserve and has not skated since the New York Rangers swept the Capitals in the 2024 first-round playoff series, where he recorded one assist. Oshie received stem cell injections in five discs in early January 2024 and initially experienced significant pain. After six weeks his doctor allowed limited training and advised a 12-week recovery window. At 12 weeks he felt movement, completed a short detox and increased training, but determined his back could not sustain NHL-level play.
