"President Donald Trump took over the running of the Kennedy Center in DC after returning to power last year. He installed his own board and appointed Grenell as acting director. Almost immediately, performers and producers began to pull their shows. Anything deemed related to DEI or "woke" was axed, and attendance plummeted."
"When the new board approved changing the name to the "The Donald J Trump and the John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts," it drew major backlash from lawmakers and members of the Kennedy family. Following a tumultuous 12 months, it was announced that the Kennedy Center will close this summer, following July 4th celebrations."
Richard Grenell served as acting director of the Kennedy Center after President Trump took control and installed a new board. The administration removed programs deemed related to DEI and "woke" initiatives, causing performers and producers to withdraw their shows and attendance to decline significantly. The board's decision to rename the center to include Trump's name generated substantial backlash from lawmakers and Kennedy family members. After a turbulent year, the Kennedy Center announced it would close following July 4th celebrations for two years of renovations. Grenell subsequently left his position and was replaced by Matt Floca. When New York Times reporter Elizabeth Williamson contacted Grenell about his departure, his attempt to insult her as a "left wing hack" did not succeed.
