A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking President Trump's initiative to shut down the Education Department and mandated the reinstatement of employees laid off during mass layoffs. The lawsuit, filed by Massachusetts school districts and education groups, argued that the layoffs fundamentally undermined the department's ability to fulfill its legislative duties, including supporting special education and enforcing civil rights laws. The ruling highlights concerns over the harmful impact of such layoffs on vulnerable student populations, challenging the Trump administration's claims that efficiency was the primary goal behind the layoffs.
In his order, Joun said the plaintiffs painted a "stark picture of the irreparable harm that will result from financial uncertainty and delay, impeded access to vital knowledge on which students and educators rely, and loss of essential services for America's most vulnerable student populations."
U.S. District Judge Myong Joun in Boston granted a preliminary injunction stopping the Trump administration from carrying out two plans announced in March that sought to work toward Trump's goal to dismantle the department.
