"It's an unsettling time, and I would point directly to the shifting footprint of the federal government in Washington,"
"What we're seeing is just devastating impact on unprecedented immigration enforcement, and that has the impact, obviously, on individuals, on their families, on their ability to work, but it also has a big impact on business,"
"People aren't going to work,"
Cuts from the Department of Government Efficiency and the deployment of National Guard troops have left many Washington residents feeling very anxious. A National Guard presence followed a declared "crime emergency" and coincided with an initial roughly 10% drop in violent crime during the first three weeks of deployment. Violent crime decreased by 35% between 2023 and 2024 and by 28% so far this year, per D.C. Metropolitan Police Department figures. ICE arrests rose from 85 between Jan. 20 and end of July to around 1,200 from early August to mid-September. The intensified immigration enforcement has produced workforce disruptions, reducing labor availability and harming hospitality, tourism, and construction sectors.
