"The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world. We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love."
"Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society. Regardless of how a woman finds her way into the adult entertainment industry, many in this space experience abuse, harassment, and violence to which they should never be subjected."
The Atlanta Hawks announced a 'Magic City Monday' promotion celebrating the famous adult entertainment club during their game against the Orlando Magic. The event includes merchandise, a T.I. halftime performance, and food from the club. San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet publicly opposed the promotion through a Medium statement, urging the Hawks to cancel it to maintain the NBA as a safe and respectful environment. Kornet argued the promotion objectifies women and fails to protect those in the adult entertainment industry who experience abuse, harassment, and violence. He contended that allowing the event to proceed without protest would make the NBA complicit in mistreating women. Hawks owner Jami Gertz produced a docuseries about Magic City that aired on Starz.
