Washington's roster includes high-upside prospects such as Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George, AJ Johnson and Cam Whitmore, but Tre Johnson presents arguably the most upside. Washington selected Johnson at No. 6 in the 2025 NBA Draft after sliding out of the top five. Johnson averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a freshman starter at Texas, shooting 42.7% overall and 39.7% from three. Johnson can score on- and off-ball and displays high basketball IQ, but his playmaking and consistent willingness to create for teammates remain areas needing development as defenses key on him.
Washington landed Johnson with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, avoiding a near disaster after sliding out of the top five as a whole in the NBA Draft Lottery in May. Nonetheless, missing out on Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper may have let Washington to the perfect prospect, at least for them and the rebuild taking place in the DMV.
Johnson has everything a team could covet in regards to scoring potential and he showed that on a consistent basis this past year at Texas. The explosive guard averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a full-time starter as a freshman with the Longhorns last season. In addition to his impressive stats, the 19-year-old only added to the confidence of scouts with efficient shooting splits of 42.7% from field goal range and 39.7% from beyond the arc.
