Golden State achieved its first franchise victory by defeating the Washington Mystics 76-74, overcoming shooting struggles with a strong defensive performance. Key players included Veronica Burton, who scored a career-high 22 points, and Kayla Thornton, who praised the team's ability to persevere under pressure. Despite Golden State's poor shooting percentages, their solid defense forced 17 turnovers, establishing a critical advantage. The game also saw a concerning injury to Tiffany Hayes, the starting shooting guard, who was injured after a collision, but she showed resilience in seeking recovery.
This is our first game where we kind of hit some adversity. Our shots weren't hitting, but we just stuck with it. I'm just so proud of our team because we could have just folded. And there could have been excuses because we were a young team, we don't know the system. But we just pushed through, and everybody contributed to this win tonight.
I was grateful to see the ball go through the net.
Golden State won Wednesday's game on the defensive end...The Valkyries missed their first 17 3-point attempts and couldn't find any consistency at the rim, but kept the game within striking distance throughout the second half.
