Initiated in 2012 by SHAU architecture, the Microlibrary Project in Indonesia focuses on constructing microlibraries that enhance literacy while being environmentally sustainable. With eight libraries built so far, the project utilizes recycled materials, such as discarded ice cream buckets, to create structures that are not only resourceful but also employ passive cooling designs to combat heat. These libraries, like Babakan Sari and Bima, serve as community hubs by organizing activities with local youth organizations and engaging schools for visits, establishing themselves as centers for both learning and recreation.
The library structures creatively incorporate recycled materials, such as discarded ice cream buckets, and utilize passive cooling techniques, emphasizing both sustainability and community engagement.
Founded by Daliana Suryawinata and Florian Heinzelmann, the SHAU architecture firm aims to promote literacy through a network of innovative microlibraries across Indonesia.
