49ers, Hall of Famer Steve Young partner to bring more access to flag football for girls
"Boys have played it for 100 years, but football, at its root was made for girls,"
"When I said football is made for girls, like I really felt that, like it was in my heart,"
"And then, because we're 100 years behind in a way, we owe it to them."
"Access and expanding the reach and making sure that every girl who wanted to play flag football had the opportunity and removing those barriers,"
The San Francisco 49ers, the 49ers Foundation and the Forever Young Foundation launched the Football is Made for Girls Initiative to promote girls flag football from youth leagues through high school. The initiative plans special P.E. programs to bring flag football to more than 100 Bay Area schools and focuses on removing barriers so every interested girl can participate. Steve Young serves as honorary captain after coaching his daughter's flag team and emphasizes that girls show strong knowledge and passion for the game. The program aligns with flag football's global growth ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
