In the face of chaos and uncertainty due to conflict, young Iranians, especially those in Tehran, are relying on online platforms for support and communication. As traditional forms of shelter are scarce and public safety is compromised, chat apps like Discord and WhatsApp have become vital lifelines for expressing fears, sharing resources, and finding community. Momo, a 24-year-old student, represents a generation determined to remain in their country despite the risks, stating they will not submit to oppression or aggression. The digital space emerges as a critical support system in their lives, often serving as both a refuge and an organizing tool.
With conventional safe havens out of reach and communication networks under heavy surveillance or blocked entirely, Iran's Generation Z are carving out new refuges in the digital world.
Many of us are staying. We don't know how long this will last, but I'd rather my home become my grave than live in displacement.
