Madison Keys, who rose through the ranks of tennis from a young age, experienced an emotional roller coaster after winning the Australian Open in January. Despite her lifelong dream being realized, the immediate aftermath saw her questioning what to do next, leading to three days of rest and recovery at home. Keys noted that many past players had warned her about the emotional crash that can follow such high achievements, indicating that the 'existential crisis' she felt is common among athletes at the top of their game.
It was really emotionally draining," Keys, 30, told ESPN this week ahead of the BNP Paribas Open. "I mean, you were just experiencing the highest of highs and then you come home and it just kind of ends.
It's actually funny how many former players I had reach out and be like, 'The existential crisis is totally normal,' Keys said.
