"Adding a smiley face to a good news message at work can boost perceptions of competence and appropriateness. Matching emoji meaning to message content is most important for perceptions of competence and appropriateness."
"Women judged other women's negative emoji use more harshly than men's, but men didn't show this bias. This highlights the nuanced social dynamics at play in workplace communication."
Emojis in workplace communication can positively influence perceptions of competence and appropriateness when used correctly. Matching emoji meaning to message content is crucial. Women tend to judge other women's negative emoji use more harshly than men's, while men do not exhibit this bias. Research conducted with 243 undergraduates evaluated how different combinations of message tone, emoji type, and sender gender affected perceptions. Messages without emojis received high ratings, but appropriate emoji use can improve perceptions significantly.
