Using sewing classes to empower women
Briefly

Kundakala, a social enterprise founded by Poornima Kirloskar-Saini, is equipping women from low-income households in London with skills in tailoring. Focused in Islington, Camden, Hackney, and Lambeth, the initiative not only aims to reduce debt and create income opportunities but also addresses cultural constraints by offering home-based skills. Over 150 women have participated, with 15 starting their own microbusinesses, contributing to both financial stability and improved mental health. The program fosters lifelong friendships and social integration among participants, particularly in the context of recent financial challenges such as the pandemic and cost of living crisis.
"I thought it would be great to give them some skills so that they could look at saving money, reducing debt, and possibly looking at an avenue of income generation."
"Our main thing was to help them save money and reduce debt. But along the way, we've also had a lot of positive mental health outcomes, social integration, lifelong friendships."
