"We're settling a war that's been going on for decades,"
"They spent a lot of time killing each other, and now they're going to spend a lot of time hugging, holding hands, and taking advantage of the United States of America economically, like every other country does,"
"I do believe this day is the beginning of a new path, a demanding path, yes. Indeed, quite difficult,"
"But this is a path where peace will not just be a wish, an aspiration, but a turning point."
US President Donald Trump hosted Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi in Washington to mark a peace and economic integration pact aimed at ending decades of conflict in eastern Congo. Kagame and Tshisekedi reaffirmed a US-brokered agreement first signed in June and built on months of diplomacy by the US, the African Union and Qatar. Fighting continues as more than 100 armed groups, notably M23, have intensified violence and captured major cities such as Goma and Bukavu. Rwanda denies backing M23 despite UN assertions. M23 was not part of the Congo-Rwanda deal and engaged in separate Qatar-mediated talks. Clashes were reported in South Kivu during the signing, and the two leaders showed little personal interaction at the ceremony.
