Draper reveals extent of arm injury before US Open
Briefly

Jack Draper has been struggling for several months with a bruised humerus on his serving arm, causing discomfort on serves and forehands. The 23-year-old English player reached the US Open semi-finals last year and will face Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez in the first round. The injury worsened through the grass-court season and affected his Wimbledon performance, prompting medical checks. Draper withdrew from the Canadian and Cincinnati Opens to recover and has not played a competitive singles match since early July. He has been managing treatment and feels ready to return to full competition without holding back.
Left-handed Draper revealed he has been struggling for several months with a bruised humerus - the bone that runs from the shoulder to elbow - on his serving arm. But the 23-year-old Englishman, who reached the New York semi-finals last year, has attempted to play down the issue before his first-round match on Monday. "It's an injury which takes time to heal," said Draper, who starts against Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez. "A bone can heal but it might be giving me some discomfort. "I have been looking after this for a while so I'm looking forward to just getting back competing. "I don't feel like I'll be holding back at all."
Draper has not played a competitive singles match since his surprise Wimbledon second-round exit in early July. He pulled out of the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open - both key ATP tournaments leading up to the US Open - in order to fully recover from the arm issue. After starting to feel a problem during the clay-court swing, he said it got "progressively worse" over the grass-court season which culminates at the All England Club.
