A DW crew in Ramallah, including Senior International Correspondent Fanny Facsar, was documenting risks when Israeli soldiers aimed weapons at them and fired tear gas, despite the crew wearing protective gear marked "PRESS". The tear gas hit the group but nobody was injured. DW Director General Peter Limbourg condemned the incident and called on the Israeli government to ensure the safety of all journalists. DW affirmed its commitment to continue reporting and to advocate for staff safety and press freedom worldwide. The Ramallah incident followed a July attack by Israeli settlers in Sinjil that damaged a DW crew's car while the journalists escaped unharmed.
"The repeated attacks on our journalists in the West Bank are absolutely unacceptable. There is no justification for threatening press representatives neither by the military nor by radical settlers," Limbourg said.
"We call on the Israeli government to ensure the safety of all journalists. Press freedom and the protection of media professionals are fundamental pillars of any democracy," Limbourg stressed.
