Emotional Raducanu beats Cristian in Korea Open
"Raducanu, who withdrew from Great Britain's team for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals to play at the tournament in Seoul, looked like she was on the verge of tears at one stage in the first set before going on to win 6-3 6-4. The 22-year-old's emotions almost appeared to get the better of her after she had netted a forehand and faced two break points at 3-3 in the first set of a match which had been delayed because of rain."
"Raducanu regained her composure to hold serve and, thanks to a double fault from Cristian, took a 5-3 lead. Raducanu saved two break points when serving for the set before she took it in one hour and seven minutes. The world number 33 produced a stunning running forehand winner down the line as she twice broke back against Cristian, who is 41st in the women's rankings, early in the second set."
Emma Raducanu, British number one and world No.33, beat Jaqueline Cristian of Romania 6-3 6-4 in the Korea Open first round. Raducanu nearly cried at 3-3 in the first set after netting a forehand and facing two break points following a rain delay, but regained composure to hold serve and moved 5-3 after a Cristian double fault. Raducanu saved two break points to take the first set, then used a running forehand winner to break back twice early in the second. She broke again to serve for the match and won in two hours and two minutes. Raducanu had withdrawn from Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals to play in Seoul and cited long-term development and her partnership with new coach Francisco Roig as reasons. She will face Barbora Krejcikova next.
