"The former world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is to be elected president of World Boxing and lead the sport as it heads towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Golovkin, who won Olympic silver in Athens in 2004 and went on to make the most world title defences in middleweight history, is the only presidential candidate approved by the sport's independent vetting panel for Sunday's election."

Gennady Golovkin will be elected president of World Boxing and will lead the organisation toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Golovkin won Olympic silver in Athens 2004 and made the most world title defences in middleweight history. He is the only candidate approved by the sport's independent vetting panel and will take charge of World Boxing, which became the governing body for amateur Olympic boxing this year after the International Boxing Association was banished by the IOC in 2023. Golovkin pledged to restore trust, strengthen governance, ensure financial transparency, improve judging technology and expand opportunities globally. His initial term runs until 2027.
