U.S. forces conducted a large-scale military strike in Venezuela, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and extraditing them to the United States on narcoterrorism, cocaine trafficking, and weapons charges. Both had been charged since 2020 but were not previously in custody. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Times Square and other locations on Jan. 3 to protest the operation. Maduro and his wife are held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park and Maduro is expected in Manhattan federal court. Tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela have a long history, including a 2015 White House designation of Maduro's administration as a national security threat.
