India: Modi and Starmer hail trade deal during Mumbai visit DW 10/09/2025
"We're opening up new opportunities in India for British businesses, opportunities that other countries simply do not have. It has given us a unique edge."
"We are creating a new modern partnership focusing on the future,"
"an example of stability in an uncertain world."
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Mumbai for two days, accompanied by about 125 leaders from British business, culture and university sectors. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the delegation as India seeks global investment for its rapidly growing economy. India became the world's fifth-largest economy in 2022 and is forecast to overtake Japan as the fourth largest later this year; the UK is the sixth largest. The two leaders hailed a new trade deal expected to take effect within a year. Current bilateral trade is about $54.8 billion and investments support over 600,000 jobs; the deal is projected to raise trade by roughly $34 billion and expand business opportunities.
