More than 600 people died in floods and landslides across southeast Asia after heavy monsoon rains overwhelmed parts of Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. In Indonesia, officials reported over 442 deaths, hundreds injured and 402 missing, with Sumatra island among the hardest-hit areas and thousands stranded without critical supplies. Floods and landslides damaged roads, downed communications and made some areas inaccessible, prompting deployment of two warships from Jakarta for aid delivery. Residents described homes and businesses destroyed and sheltered beside remaining walls. Reports surfaced of people breaking into shops before aid arrived amid shortages of food, water and medicine.
