Iraq starts mass grave excavation from ISIL (ISIS) carnage south of Mosul
Briefly

Excavation at the al-Khasfa site, near Mosul, has started, where Iraqi officials believe ISIL left behind 4,000 remains. The site is a massive sinkhole, estimated to be 150 metres deep, linked to severe atrocities by ISIL from 2014-2017. Local authorities, the judiciary, and various organizations are joining forces in this effort. The initial focus is on visible remains while preparing for a full exhumation, necessitating international support due to site hazards. Authorities also plan to build a database and collect DNA from families to identify remains.
The al-Khasfa site, believed to be a mass grave left by ISIL, may contain at least 4,000 remains and potentially thousands more.
Excavation efforts are being carried out by local authorities alongside forensic investigators and the Iraqi Martyrs Foundation to gather visible human remains.
The site poses challenges due to hazards like sulfur water and unexploded ordnance, making full exhumation dependent on specialized assistance.
DNA samples will be collected from families of suspected victims to aid in identification after preliminary surface evidence is gathered.
