Hokkaido Electric Power Co and Tohoku Electric Power Co have several shutdown nuclear power plants in these areas. Tohoku Electric is assessing the impact on its Onagawa nuclear power plant. Authorities expect significant tsunami waves in Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced an emergency task force and urged evacuations. Bullet train services in Aomori were halted due to the tremors.
