"I have decided to resign from the position of president of the Liberal Democratic Party,"
"Now that negotiations on US tariff measures have reached a conclusion, I believe this is the appropriate moment,"
"I have decided to step aside and make way for the next generation."
Shigeru Ishiba announced his resignation as president of the Liberal Democratic Party after serving since October 2024. The LDP lost its lower house majority in a snap election and failed to secure the 248 seats needed in the upper house, marking the first time the party lacked majorities in both houses since 1955. Internal party opponents, mostly right-wing, had pressed for his resignation after the upper house loss. Ishiba resisted while tariff negotiations with the United States continued, and he cited the conclusion of those negotiations as the appropriate moment to step aside. He will remain in office until a new party leader is elected.
